New center opens aiming to help struggling veterans

MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. -- A new center is opening its doors to veterans of the entire northern panhandle.

The nonprofit organization has been in the making for more than two years.

With Helping Heroes now open, representatives say there's a massive network of support they can provide once you step inside.

"There isn't a place that is that first stepping stone, there's a stigma to getting help. We think that it might be easier for someone to walk in the door and say, ‘hey I need help with a bill or I need help finding a job,’" said Susan Harrison of Helping Heroes.

Helping heroes is now a center for veterans wanting help with finding housing, jobs, schooling, or dealing with financial issues.

"We'll also work with families that are struggling with their marriages or kids that need referrals to outside community organizations," said Harrison.

Completely reconstructed with a new layout, new flooring and fresh paint, Helping Heroes has a cozy, welcoming interior for veterans.

The newly renovated building along Jefferson Avenue in Moundsville is stocked with a lot of literature about the various struggles associated with returning from service.

Also there, are several computer stations where case workers will work with veterans looking to increase or just maintain their self-sufficiency.

Harrison said increasing self-sufficiency may include better budgeting, job training, looking for new jobs in the area or schooling.

Harrison said even if your not sure about the whole idea of visiting with a case worker, or you're a family member of a veteran, you can come check out their museum, stocked with local and national military memorabilia.

A visit to helping heroes, the museum or to see a case worker, is by appointment only right now because funding only allows them to have a part-time case worker at this time.
