Steubenville, OH —

March 30 is the deadline for Steubenville to balance its budget and with a deficit greater than $200,000, the city is once again talking about some drastic cuts.

On Monday night during a finance committee meeting, things got heated when City Manager Cathy Davison proposed her latest measures to close the gap.

Two of Steubenville's three city employee unions will be facing cuts, but that's not all. Davison is also proposing the Pleasant Heights Fire Station be shut down.

Fire officials couldn't believe the city manager's suggestion to close the fire house.

"I cannot express my disgust for the council, for the city manager, if she lets this go through," said Chris Blackburn, president of the Local 228 Steubenville Firefighters Union. "I mean we are doing our best and we want to assure the citizens that we are not going to take this lying down. We will fight it with everything we have."

The closure includes the layoff of five city firefighters and the leadership of the firefighter's union says that's not in the best interest of residents.

"Council members are voicing their own opinions. Their own personal agenda, two of which have publicly announced that they will not seek another term," said Blackburn. "But they're going to make decisions like this that will last a lifetime for the citizens of Steubenville and the firefighters of Pleasant Heights."

Blackburn says the firefighters union has hired its own auditor, to review some of the numbers to see if any other action could be taken.

But they aren't the only union facing cuts, in the city manager's proposal the cities municipal employees union, or AFSCME, will lose three members.

"We can't afford any more cuts like I said there's more snow control vehicles than there are men in the street department right now," said Brian Young, president of the AFSCME local union. "It's if everybody wasn't working together the city wouldn't run right now."

With a council meeting set for Tuesday night, union leaders are urging residents to make their opinions known.
