New Jefferson Co. Port Authority planning for economic development opportunities

By Briona Arradondo and  NEWS9

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio —

Jefferson County held its first Port Authority meeting on Thursday since the city of Steubenville dissolved its port authority earlier this year.

New board members now have the task of building a strong presence in the county. The board of directors said they are challenged with forming a mission and bringing economic development to Jefferson County.

Jay Zatta, new Port Authority chairperson, said he's looking forward to furthering economic activity in the area.

The board listed to advice from other regional port authority directors who used to serve Jefferson County.

"I think Jefferson County is in a position where you do have the Ohio River, which is a navigable river for barge traffic (and) you've got multiple railroads," said Mike Jacoby of the Zanesville Muskingum County Port Authority.

Officials said that may make for more economic development opportunities, especially with oil and gas companies

As a new government-like entity, the board faces challenges that include funding, timetables and partnerships.

"We're new, we're just getting started so as soon as we get organized, we're really looking forward to finding our first opportunity for Jefferson County," Zatta said.

The port authority will meet monthly starting in October. Officials with the authority said they plan to work with city organizations and officials to put out an action plan for building revenue and creating more opportunity in the area.
