New multimillion-dollar Cameron middle/high school completed

MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. —

Four years after plans were announced to build a new multimillion-dollar middle and high school in Cameron, the school opened up on Thursday.

The school opened up a year later than anticipated, and students said they are excited to finally be in the new building.

Thursday and Friday, they’ll go through an orientation with tours, find their new classrooms and move items from their lockers to the new school while still attending classes at the old school.

The new school is quite large: Officials said if a person were to walk around the new school and take a look at every classroom, that tour would be about 1.2 miles long.

"I'm really excited because I don't know any other school in the state of West Virginia that is going to match this one -- AAA, AA or whatever. We have all the latest technology here that any student would ever need to get an education,” said Jack Cain, Cameron High School principal.

There are still some items that need to be taken care of, like installing security cameras and finishing some carpentry and painting. Over the weekend, crews will go through a final checklist including cleaning the hallways and restrooms.

Students will start classes at their new school at 8:20 a.m. Monday.
