New security system up and running at WPHS

By Philip Stahl

WHEELING, W.Va.—

A new door alarm security system is up and running at the Ohio Valley’s most populated high school.

With more than 1,700 students, the Ohio County EMA along with several other agencies collected grant money to get all 79 doors secured and monitored by an electronic system.

“If you open any door during the school hours, an alarm will beep and notify the school resource officer,” said EMA Director Lou Vargo.

Along with the new system, all doors have numbers on them.

“They are labeled for many reasons, one so we can identify where the door is located for our system, the other is for EMS, fire and police personnel. Say there is an emergency in one part of the school, we can say ‘go to this certain door’ and it will save response time,” said Vargo.

The system was installed this past summer. Along with the door monitoring system, several new cameras are being installed for safety reasons.
