New Year's Eve Ball Drops In Local Square

BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. —

It may not have been in the heart of the Big Apple, but the New Year's Eve ball in Wellsburg Times Square had the same kind of effect-- it brought an entire community together.

"Hey, we're small but we have fun like the big cities, that's right," said Mayor Wayne Campbell.

Campbell said a big part of the celebration is thanks to Brooke High School's machine and tool technology class. He said the class constructed the town square ball.

"It's 5 feet in diameter, weighs 150 pounds and it's got 250 to 300 lights on it," said Brooke High School teacher Matt Moore.

And for those who wanted to head out to see the ball drop but were worried about the cold, they had that covered.

"They have the entertainment of music being played and of course we'll have hot chocolate, because we're going to need a lot of that tonight," said Campbell.

The New Year's Eve event was equipped with a fireworks display along the river along the river at midnight.
