But there is one group of people that will not be welcome at the liquor store counter this New Year’s Eve – or any other time of year for that matter. Joe Pino, the cashier of the convenient mini mart, said it’s easy for him to spot an underage drinker.
“The ones that stand out are the ones that look really young and are a little bit fidgety,” said Pino. Liquor stores are working hard to do their part in cracking down on underage drinking.
"We ask for their ID whether the person is actually purchasing the liquor himself or herself or if there's let’s say two people at the counter and one person has $20 and the bottle is $30 dollars and they ask the other person for the money - then I need to check both IDs," said Pino.
Martha Polinsky, program director of The Ohio County Abuse Prevention Coalition says they are doing what they can as well, from funding liquor store compliance checks to recommending alternative ways to celebrate the holiday, without the booze.
"There's lots of other things to do that doesn't always have to focus on that alcohol. And to show your kids that you don't have to have the alcohol when you're celebrating you know, you can do these things without alcohol and still have fun."
And Polinsky says reducing underage drinking starts with changing your frame of mind, which is a process that starts at home.
"The big way in our county that we found through assessments is that kids get it socially from parents, friends you know so we're trying to focus on that social aspect. "
