NEWS9 goes inside civil disturbance training

By Kate Davison

NEWS9 was in Guernsey County with about a dozen members of the Ohio State Highway Patrol for civil disturbance training.

Instructors made sure all weapons and equipment were in optimum condition.

Then NEWS9 had the chance to test out a special training exercise, fittingly called "red handle,” where ammunition is swapped out for cotton wads and instructors act as the traffic violators.

NEWS9’S Kate Davison put on a gun belt and a pair of safety glasses, then climbed inside a patrol car, ready to attempt a simulation of an actual traffic stop.

Sgt. Jason Greenwood said the most dangerous part about one of these stops is all of the unknowns.

“As long as the officer is getting his weapon out, returning fire, and calling for help, those are the things we're looking for," Greenwood said.

While one group hit the classroom for updated information on auto larceny, another took to the range.

First came a practice round that moved into a weapons qualifications course.

"The worst case scenario is if they have to shoot a weapon, we don't want our guys shooting innocent bystanders. We need to stop the threat," Greenwood said.
