NEWS9 takes exclusive tour of new school

By Kate Davison

Beallsville, OH —

NEWS9 took an exclusive tour of a brand new school in Monroe County that will house students in grades Pre-K through 12.

The school is set to open near the end of February.

The school is ecofriendly and nearly complete in Beallsville.

Switzerland of Ohio Superintendent Larry Elliott said changes were needed.

"The students and staff were struggling and are still struggling to make the best out of tough situations," Elliott said.

NEWS9 toured the elementary side of the building first, with its state-of-the-art classrooms, a stage that looks into the neighboring gymnasium and kid-friendly features, like sinks that sit on the outside of the bathrooms.

Over on the high school side, Principal Micah Fuchs said he's most proud of the technology upgrades.

"We're living in a 21st century world, now we have a 21st century school," Fuchs said.

The high school touts a biology lab, media room and another glossy gymnasium, just to name a few features.

Beallsville alum Scott Hagan is the mastermind behind the artwork there.

"To see the artwork personally come together is a lot of fun," Hagan said.

Another feature is an underground geothermal heating and cooling system is situated out behind the school.

"We have 90 wells, each well being 406 feet deep," Elliott said.

Officials worked to keep the project a hometown effort. The district signed into a labor agreement which ensured that 50 percent of workers would be local.

Elliott said this is just the first building they're opening as part of their major building projects.

NEWS9 is continuing to follow the upgrades.
