No Texting While Driving

Many In Martins Ferry In Favor Of Statewide Ban On Texting While Driving

Due to a city ordinance, drivers in Martins Ferry have not been allowed to text while driving for the past 10 months. A move many residents believe is for the best.

"You shouldn't text while you're driving, because it's unsafe. But everybody does it," said Ray Marling.

"I think it should be a law that you shouldn't be able to. It could cause a lot of accidents. A lot of people could get hurt," said Ron Whitacre.

Whitacre has seen first-hand how dangerous texting behind the wheel can be.

"Just the other day I was at McDonald's and a lady was texting, and she almost side wiped my car," Whitacre said.

Marling has seen texting drivers in similar situations.

"You see it all the time. Drivers driving eratically and on the phone," Marling said.

Martins Ferry Police have only ticketed one driver since the ban has passed.

"When asked why he was driving left of center. The driver, 'stated he was trying to send a text message," said Sgt. John McFarland.

Police have been keeping a close eye on drivers, but it is not an easy offense to spot.

"When they see the police, they put it down until they go by," McFarland said.

The penalty for texting while driving in Martins Ferry is a ticket of up to $150. If the state approves a ban, the fine would be the same, up to $150.
