NOBLE COUNTY, Ohio —

Officials in Noble County said a man is charged with murder in connection with the killing of his estranged girlfriend.

Tracy L. Kay, 46, of Caldwell, was killed late Saturday in her Cumberland Street apartment, investigators said. Investigators said she was shot multiple times.

Kay's estranged boyfriend, 34-year-old Larry Anthony Schoeppner, of Belle Valley, was arraigned Monday and charged with one count of murder. His bond was set at $1 million with no 10 percent allowed.

Noble County Sheriff Stephen Hannum said the Sheriff's Office received a call a few minutes before midnight on Saturday from Tasha Kay, who is the victim's daughter. She reported that her mother was entering her apartment and found Schoeppner inside the apartment. Tracy Kay asked her daughter to call police.

Marlene Warner, who lives in a neighboring apartment, said Kay was a "nice person to get to know." Warner said around 11:20 p.m. Saturday "we heard a loud noise, and here it was the daughter banging on the door in the back hallway."

Warner said she went outside to see what was going on and saw Kay's daughter.

"She said, 'Mom won't answer the phone,'" she said. Warner said she also started to knock on the door and identified herself, but there was no answer.

Two Caldwell police officers, two sheriff's deputies and the sheriff went to the apartment building. When law enforcement arrived, gunshots were heard coming from inside the building, Hannum said.

Officers went to Tracy Kay's apartment and found the door locked but determined that Schoeppner was inside. Officials said Schoeppner surrendered to police, and Tracy Kay was found on the floor with multiple gunshot wounds.

The Noble County coroner pronounced Kay dead at the scene, and her body was transported to the Stark County Coroner's Office for an autopsy.

Schoeppner was taken from Kay's apartment to the Noble County Jail. His preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 10. Officials said a special grand jury will likely be scheduled for early October.
