SMITHFIELD, Ohio —

A nonprofit food service that delivers to more than 100 people in the Ohio Valleyis being put on hold in Jefferson County.

Lunches with Love volunteers in Smithfield weren't able to deliver lunches to families in need Tuesday. They were locked out of the building where they put the lunches together.

Organizer Doug Marshall said when he came to the former church on Main Street where they prepare free hot meals for delivery, he couldn't get inside.

"The door's locked, and I was like, 'Wow, I don't know what's going on here,'" said Marshall.

The volunteers usually prepare the meals at the former church and then they deliver those meals to needy families and senior citizens in several parts of Jefferson County.

The volunteers stood outside the church as a way to contest what happened while they are locked out for now.

"There was no notice. There could have been some kind of notice that had been given to us," said Marshall. "We tried calling them this morning. Nobody would return phone calls. Nobody would answer."

NEWS9's Briona Arradondo called the owner of the building, Bob Mieckowski, and he said the problem is increasing debt. NEWS9 also called the manager of the property, Pat Freeland, who said Lunches with Love can't afford to pay its bills. And, as a result, volunteers were locked out.

So, the volunteers are making plans while this situation is sorted out.

"There have been other offers from other places that we can operate out of," said Marshall. "They may be a little bit of a stop time just to get us situated again."

Marshall said they will get back on their feet and carry out their mission to deliver meals to those in need.

"Our whole intentions of being here is to be able to deliver these meals, and still keep in contact with our clients because it is something that is very much needed. And we will not stop," said Marshall.
