Icy patches on local roads caused problems for drivers during the first part of the day Thursday before temperatures warmed up.

State troopers said they responded to about a dozen crashes due to black ice and ice patches.

"The roads (are) melting off in the daytime, and as soon as nightfall hits, it refreezes and it will stay usually frozen until morning, unless treated," said Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Ed Weigand

In Ohio County, a car slid off the road after water froze from an early-morning water line break.  And one person was killed in a Belmont County crash just after midnight after troopers said the driver hit a patch of black ice.

Around 9:30 a.m., police and troopers directed traffic at the scene of a crash on U.S. Route 22 near State Route 43 in Jefferson County. Weigand said a car hit a patch of ice and lost control, causing it and another car to slide off the road. One car went into the median and the other rolled over on the berm.

City officials said some road crews were treating icy roads, but troopers said drivers should always be cautious, especially around turns and in the early morning hours.

"Just don't take it for granted that there's not going to be a patch of ice. Just expect that there will be something," Weigand said.
