Officials: Crews will respond to emergencies in Island Creek Twp.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio —

A week after some in Island Creek Township presented a petition to make sure they have service in case of an emergency, those residents are getting answers and a better idea about service in their area.

The residents put together the petition to ensure they have the quickest, most efficient emergency response crews dispatched to their neighborhood. They presented the petition to the Island Creek Board of Trustees, and a public meeting was held late last week.

Toronto Emergency Medical Services Joint Ambulance District Chief and Director of Operations Clark Crago said the meeting was positive, and participants were able to iron out a lot of details about who will be responding to emergencies in the township.

At the public meeting, trustees, officials from TEMS and dozens of Island Creek residents voiced their concerns to put a plan in motion to make sure that area has legal coverage.

"What is solved is at least we're going to have something in documentation, and the citizens of the community got the word out on how they want to see service handled," Crago said.

Before the meeting, there was nothing on file that legally required TEMS to respond to the Island Creek area, and residents had to rely on service from departments that are farther away than TEMS.

But TEMS officials said there is now a temporary resolution in place so residents don't have to worry in the future. Officials said there is still in an agreement in the works, but is hasn't been clarified yet. Crago said no matter what, residents can rest assured that someone will respond in case of an emergency.

"The call will go out to the 911 service, and they have in their database who responds there immediately. We will continue to, as long as we're able to, provide service to Wallace Heights and those areas until the agreement is firmed up," Crago said.

It is not immediately known what this will cost taxpayers. TEMS officials said Island Creek residents will see a slight increase, but they said most people in that area previously paid a $25 family plan fee. The possible increase will most likely be similar to that, officials said.
