Ohio AG: 'No deals' in Steubenville rape case; Investigation nears end

By Eric Minor and  NEWS9

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio —

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said Thursday that his office had not granted immunity to anyone in exchange for testimony in a rape case in which two Steubenville High School student-athletes have been charged.

"I was asked several times about this," DeWine told NEWS9 in a telephone interview. "We have offered nothing, made no promises to any witness in this case. That's been consistent throughout. No deals have been cut with anybody."

The case has drawn national attention and criticism from online activists who assert that additional people should have been charged in the alleged sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl.

DeWine has not said whether additional charges are likely.

"We've interviewed a number of witnesses in the last three days," said DeWine. "We're getting close to the end of our investigation. We have a few more witnesses to interview, but the vast majority of people we have now talked to."

The Bureau of Criminal Investigation, which is under DeWine's oversight, has conducted the bulk of the investigation. Two special prosecutors from DeWine's office have been assigned to the case, which is scheduled to go to trial Feb. 13.

Attorneys for the two teens charged have said they will file a motion for a change of venue citing threats made against potential witnesses.

Hamilton County Judge Thomas Lipps is administering the trial after Jefferson County Juvenile Judge Sam Kerr stepped aside citing a potential conflict of interest.
