The attorney general of Ohio said he would consider the idea of arming at least one trained staff member in each school.

Mike DeWine made the remarks at a press conference Wednesday morning, where he also announced that his staff would expand safety training to educators.

He said he would support allowing a trained school official access to a gun during the school day, but such decisions should be up to each district.

"Many times these schools … there's no one to provide resistance to that person. So the idea that you would have someone at the school who is trained -- who is the right person, who has access to a gun -- is something that I think I would at least consider," DeWine said.

DeWine also cautioned that not everyone in a school should be armed, and guns should remain under lock-and-key.

He that nothing short of barricading every school in the country can stop something from happening, but officials have a moral obligation to take steps that will increase the odds of children surviving.

The state is expanding safety training for Ohio educators to reflect the reality that those inside a school are the first to face danger. DeWine said the state police training academy will train educators across the state in how to deal with an active shooter.

Wednesday's announcement follows last week's massacre at a Connecticut elementary school and last February's school shooting in Chardon, Ohio.
