Ohio County Health Department Accepts 2008 Budget

The Wheeling-Ohio County Board of Health signed off on a $1.2 million budget Wednesday.

The board called an emergency meeting because it must submit the budget to the state by June 1.

Local health administrator Cindi Shockey told NEWS9 the budget is balanced, but tight.

One program she was particularly concerned about is WIC, a government-funded program for women, infants and children.

Shockey said the number of WIC customers are down, which could lessen funding for that program.

Shockey said following a recent state investigation of the health department, the board will keep a close watch on next year’s budget to remain as close as possible to the projected $1.2 million.

“We're looking at each individual area within the health department to make sure that it is running as closely to the requirements that we have to have,” Shockey said.

Shockey also said employees will get a raise between $600 and $1,200.
