Ohio Valley Native In Hawaii For Tsunami Scare

A record breaking 8.8 earthquake rocked the narrow coastal country Of Chile Saturday morning.

The earthquake triggered a tsunami warning for Hawaii.

Ohio Valley native 19-Year-Old Ashton Fatula, a student at UCLA, is on vacation in Honolulu.

NEWS9's Maggie Ruper spoke with Fatula over the phone Saturday.

"We woke up to a fire alarm going off," said Fatula.

"We walked downstairs and there was police everywhere. We probably saw 15 to 20 police going non-stop and fire trucks going off," said Fatula.

The island braced for potentially deadly waves as they moved across the ocean at the speed of a jetliner.

Fatula was in lockdown in his hotel room while they waited for the tsunami.

Warnings were lifted when the waves arrived calmer than expected. The highest waves measured six feet.

Large seismic waves can measure between 30 and 70 feet.
