Ohio Valley residents deal with storm aftermath

In counties across Ohio and West Virginia, the lights are off in many homes and businesses. With temperatures in the 90s, it's not been easy for some residents to deal with having no electricity.

"Well my husband's just devastated. He's a Vietnam vet and he's just devastated," said Cambridge, Ohio, resident Sherry Connor. "It caused him to flip out last night. You know, because he's 70 years old and he's just so hot and his breathing (is affected)," she said.

Russ Ables, owner of a hardware store in Cambridge, said his phone has been ringing off the hook with people looking for generators. He drove to Columbus to pick some up Monday morning.

"I bought five whole-house generators. I sold four of them already, and I've got half of these (smaller ones) here sold -- and they've only been here an hour," Connor said.

People aren't just looking for generators, Connor said. They're calling for various building repairs all through town.

"We've been rebuilding services on the sides of houses that have been ripped off. We've been selling generators. We've been selling whole-house generators. We've been fixing air conditioners that got mashed by trees falling down," Connors said.

In Belmont County, one cooling center isn't just open for the public, but it's also housing American Electric Power employees from all over the country.

"AEP had contacted us, wanting to know what we felt about helping them set up in case something like this would happen, and so, it just kind of rolled from there," said Malissa Campbell with the James Carnes Center. "And sure enough, Friday night we got the phone call come in, wanting to know if they could come in and utilize the fairgrounds. So we said sure, no problem."

More than 250 employees from various power companies are being housed at the cooling center, working to repair the power outages that occurred Friday evening. According to a press release, it could be days until the power is restored.
