Oil Can Derby returns to Wellsburg for the holiday

By NEWS9

WELLSBURG, W.Va. -- The Oil Can Derby returned to Wellsburg Wednesday for the July Fourthholiday. Twelve drivers raced in various divisions on a hill around 4th and Commerce Streets.

"You get your car on (the race), and when he pulls the levy, you just sit in the seat and take off," said driver Austin Provenzano, of Wellsburg. "That's all you got to do."

Another driver, Rylie Winters, of Follansbee, said, "Do not hit the breaks until you're after the finish. And then make sure you hit the brakes because I went flying up the hill, and I passed this one guy."

Race organizer Fred Marino said the crowd reaction showed him the event has been missed.

"It's a smaller hill than we had before," said Marino. "The cars are a little lighter and a little slower. It's a lot safer. That's the biggest thing. Trying to make it safe. Before it was a little dangerous. They were a little fast."

Marino said organizers planned to schedule a race for next year.
