Oil Can Derby tradition is back in Wellsburg

By NEWS9

WELLSBURG, W.Va. -- A Wellsburg native is working to bring back a racing tradition in his community called the Oil Can Derby.

Fred Marino is the driving force organizing an Oil Can Derby race in Wellsburg on July 4. It will be the first derby race in the city since the 1970s.

"It was a big Wellsburg thing when I was a little kid," said Fred Marino, the organizer of the Oil Can Derby. "When I was a little kid, it was everything. It was right up there with Christmas. It was just a big family thing. I'm trying to bring that back."

Al's Auto Service, Marino's business, helped design three of the oil can derby cars.

Opening ceremonies for the derby are scheduled to start at noon Wednesday. The races are slated to begin at 1p.m.
