Oktoberfest fundraiser for Weirton pool to be held Saturday

By Briona Arradondo and  NEWS9

WEIRTON, W.Va. —

Weirton residents are preparing for an Oktoberfest fundraiser to help with the ongoing effort to save the Marland Heights Pool.

The company Future Skate laid down synthetic ice on the tennis courts on Friday for a temporary ice rink, and organizers said there will be food and craft vendors on Saturday.

The nonprofit community group has already raised thousands of dollars to save the pool from demolition, and organizers said they're working on a lease for the property with the city park board.

"We're trying to raise awareness for the pool and make it a 365-day-a-year venue," said Doug Jackson, an organizer with the community group. "A lot of people think the Marland Heights Pool is just a swimming pool, but we have this entire park that's associated with it."

The fundraiser starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday and people are welcome to bring their own ice skates.
