Wheeling, WV —

Wheeling City Council meetings have always started the same way. The hands on the clock hit seven and the mayor calls everyone to order.

But residents might have to adjust their alarms and fix their calendars if council members can get a new ordinance passed.

One that will change meeting times from 7 p.m. to noon on the first meeting of the month and 5:30 p.m. on the second.

"We're going to try this and see if it improves participation and it's all a part of being as transparent as possible and trying to get private citizens more active in what we do here in city government," said Fourth Ward Councilman David Miller.

But not everyone thinks this will increase participation. Some residents think it will lead to more empty seats.

"I think they ought to stick to the seven o'clock it's been that way for years and years,” said resident Bill O’Leary. “If it's not broke don't fix it."

Council members say they want to help business people who get off work at five or work other shifts. But once again residents are citing a number of issues with the changes, especially with that noon meeting time.

"I feel the 12 o'clock meeting is not going to work there just isn't a place to park,” said O’Leary. “People on their lunch hour are not going to want to come to a council meeting."

The first reading was Tuesday night and on September 18th meeting will be the final reading. If it is passed then the ordinance would go into effect for October.
