OSHP cracks down on unlicensed motorcyclists

By Briona Arradondo

OHIO —

The Ohio State Highway Patrol will crack down on unlicensed motorcyclists on the road after troopers said they are catching more violators this summer.

"We're looking at motorcycles. If I run your plate and you don't have a motorcycle endorsement, then you can be stopped," said Sgt. Todd McDonald of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Recently, McDonald said, they’ve been getting more calls for motorcycle-related crashes and violations.

"We do notice that we're having more crashes involving them," said McDonald. "Some of them are just driver inexperience; some of them do not have even endorsement to operate a motorcycle."

The most recent crash was June 9 on U.S. Route 22 near the junction for state Route 7. One man was injured, and troopers said they later discovered he wasn't properly licensed. Troopers said they see several factors going into why more people are violating laws.

"It appears that a lot people, for some reason, are intimidated that go and try to get their motorcycle endorsement or permit; or maybe they go get a permit, and they just let it expire," said McDonald.

So far this year, there were two fatal crashes in Harrison County -- which is attention-grabbing for troopers, he said.

"We're just trying to make sure they slow down, operate safely, wear safety equipment," said McDonald. "We are aggressively looking at motorcycles to try and keep the injuries down."

Troopers said there's not much room for error, so they stress that cyclists wear protective gear and ride slowly to get familiar with the roads.

In West Virginia, State Patrol troopers said they haven't seen a jump in violators. However, since the state does require cyclists to wear a helmet, troopers said they occasionally pull people over for not wearing them who ride across the state line from Ohio.
