JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio —

The Ohio Valley Athletic Conference has implemented disciplinary action against Buckeye Local's competition cheering squad, saying the squad performed a routine that violated a number of rules.

Both the coach, Lynda Piergallini, and the competition squad are being penalized, according to a decision coming from the OVAC executive board.

Piergallini said the routine at the OVAC cheering competition wasn't meant as disrespect but was rather about having fun.

The OVAC executive board did not take it lightly. Piergallini is not permitted to be present at an OVAC championship for the next three years.

While she can teach the squad its routine and be involved throughout the year, she cannot be at the actual event.

When it comes to the squad, the cheerleaders are on three-year probation. While they can compete in the competition, if they violate any rules during that time, Buckeye Local would be banned from the competition altogether.

Finally, seniors on the squad are ineligible to receive the cheering scholarship or compete in the All-Star Cheering Squad.

"The Buckeye Local School District wants to put this behind us. We feel that we'll abide by the decision of the OVAC, and we would like to move forward," said Buckeye Local Superintendent Mark Miller.

Miller said Buckeye Local administrators have met with the squad and coach, and everyone is clear about the disciplinary action they are faced with.
