BRIDGEPORT, Ohio —

Nicole Ray and Dathan Davis Jr., the parents of a 5-week-old baby, are behind bars Thursday, after authorities say they are responsible for multiple fractures to the baby's skull and legs.

The baby is still in a Columbus hospital in an intensive care unit, Simpson said.

The suspects have been wanted since August 15 on charges that took place in Wheeling, W.Va., said U.S. Marshal Chad Simpson. U.S. Marshals and Bridgeport Police police officers arrested the two inĀ Bridgeport after getting a tip they were staying at a home there.

"Initially when the detectives from Wheeling P.D. did the investigation, they had blamed the dog, then they came up with some other story how it happened, it was an accident. The Wheeling detectives did further investigation on the history and went ahead and got warrants for both of them for child abuse," Simpson said.

According to Simpson, no one answered the door when the agencies approached, so they had to force entry.

"We're going to continue to kick in the doors and go inside your residence and locate you, so even though you're hiding it's not going to stop anything. You're just going to make it worse for yourself," he said.

Simpson said when the entered the home, they had to do some searching.

"We found Nicole Ray hiding in the closet; Davis was sitting in the couch. Upon transport to the jail, Davis told us he was trying to hide inside a large bean bag. They cut it open -- he was going to hide inside this bean bag -- but by the time we kicked in the door, he didn't have enough time," he said.

Ray also has two other older children, Simpson said, adding he believes she does not have custody due to prior offenses.

Ray and Davis are being held in the Belmont County Jail and will be transported to the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville, W.Va.
