Parents Charged With Hosting Underage Drinking Party

Two local parents are facing charges for allegedly permitting an underage drinking party in their Ohio County home.

Deputies said the party happened in the Oglebay area and the parents, George and Lesa Thieroff, were well-aware of what was going on inside their Fairfield Drive home.

The Thieroffs are charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and providing beer to a minor, which are both misdemeanors.

With graduation parties this time of year, the incident is prompting local groups to turn their focus from preventing the sale of alcohol to minors to the parents who are freely giving it to them.

Survey: Do you know parents who host underage drinking parties and/or buy alcohol for underage kids?

The Ohio County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition is working to change some old mindsets.

Martha Polinsky, of the coalition, said people often think "'it's just a normal thing,' 'it's a rite of passage,' 'they're going to do it anyway.'"

The coalition has been working with local businesses to prevent minors' access to alcohol. The next step is parents and friends who provide drinks.

Polinsky said 60 to 70 percent of kids who get access to alcohol get it through family or friends.
