Parents confront Edison Local board members with concerns

Jefferson County, OH —

A number of concerned parents confronted members of the Edison Local Board of Education with questions during Tuesday night's meeting.

The meeting was the first since the school district's proposed operating levy failed during last Tuesday's special election.

The meeting lasted an hour and when it was over the dozens of questions that parents had asked board members had turned into concerns.
When the meeting started, superintendent Bill Beattie explained the cuts that will be made, including the closure of Pleasant Hill Elementary School, the cuts to high school busing and staffing cuts.

After that, board members talked about Gov. John Kasich's proposed school funding plan. The proposal does not increase state funds for the struggling district. After board members spoke, parents posed questions to help them understand the cuts.

But they were disappointed to find there is nothing the district can do but move forward with them. School officials say they're main focus is the education of students and despite the severity of these cuts they believe they allow the district to continue providing the best education they can.

Beattie says he is working to set up a meeting between local legislators, county officials and even state officials to figure out how the district can put it in a better position to receive state funding should the governor choose to change his proposal.
