People Generate Their Own Heat After Outage

Thousands of people were left without power Wednesday as windy weather across the Valley knocked down power lines, causing numerous outages.

However, NEWS9 talked with the Wrixons, a couple affected by the power outages, and they said they've been prepared for this sort of catastrophe for a long time.

The high winds knocked one of their tall pine trees into a neighboring power line, leaving them in the dark.

But, at a time when many in the Valley are running for a warming shelter, Ron Wrixon relied on his own generator to power most of his home after the accident.

"I'm backed up with wood, I'm backed up with propane and of course, with the generator, partial electricity to the house so you don't have to do without some of the necessities," Ron Wrixon said.

"We didn't have the microwave but we had the coffee pot going, and the coffee pot was very important this morning," Janet Wrixon told NEWS9.

American Electric Power finally restored full power to the Wrixons home around 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, and Ron Wrixon was finally able to turn the generator off.

Ron Wrixon told NEWS9 days like Wednesday, when so many people are without power, he's glad he's always prepared.
