Plans for new Beaver Local K-12 facility coming along

By Aly Cohen

COLUMBIANA COUNTY, Ohio —

After 10 years, Beaver Local School District is finally getting to build the K-12 school building that its leaders have been wanting, and they're basing it on 21st-century learning. That style of learning incorporates four C's, creativity, communication, collaboration and critical thinking.

Eighth-grade algebra and science teacher Sarah Lowe played a major role in getting the students involved in the process.

"Over the next few years as we make the transition, not only are they going to see a new school but they've got that interest of project-based learning behind it. They're doing everything from the architecture to the floor plans, the budget and everything else that could be included in the new building," Lowe explained.

That new building will also include three basketball courts, and there will be centralized baseball and softball fields, and upgraded soccer facilities.

The bond issue to build the new school passed last March and the district plans to break ground in August, over a large space on the current baseball fields.

Funding for the facility will be split between the state and the district. The state is responsible for 62 percentand the school district is responsible for a 38 percent share, which equals about $21.5 million.
