MARTINS FERRY, Ohio —

A Belmont County couple is in jail on child endangerment charges after police said they were driving under the influence with two children in the back seat.

Police in Martins Ferry said they received a call reporting a disabled vehicle at the intersection of State Route 7 and Hanover Street around 6 p.m. Sunday.

Officers said they quickly realized both the driver and the passenger -- Lisa Hankish and William Bender -- appeared to be intoxicated, with children ages 2 and 6 in the back seat.

Police said the couple was arguing and a few minutes later, the woman fled down a street. She was later located on North Fifth Street and arrested.

Martins Ferry Police Chief John McFarland said these types of cases rarely end well.

"There's so many different options to have to keep from doing something like that. Why you'd ever put your kids in that position and get behind the wheel of a car and drive is one thing, but think of everyone else out on the road, too, that are riding around with their kids in their car," McFarland said.

Both Hankish and Bender were transported to the Belmont County Jail on child endangerment charges.
