STEUBENVILLE, Ohio --

A Steubenville police officer will be placed on administrative leave after other officers said he may have fired gunshots at a personal vehicle in his garage.

Officials are still investigating the incident surrounding Capt. Paul Harbert.

In a news release, City Law Director Gary Repella said that the incident happened on Jan. 31 when police responded to Harbert's home.

When officers arrived at Harbert's house in Steubenville, they noticed several rounds of ammunition fired into a personal vehicle in the garage. Though the news release doesn't say exactly who police believe fired the shots, it implies the captain most likely was the one using a gun that night.

The news release doesn't say if a personal weapon or a service weapon was fired.

No one was injured as a result of the incident, and Harbert was transported, then admitted to Trinity West.

On Wednesday, Harbert was released from the hospital and is currently on sick leave, Repella said.

Repella said when Harbert returns to active police duty, he will be placed on administrative leave with pay and be ordered to submit to a fitness-for-duty evaluation by a trained health professional.

In addition, the Steubenville Police Department's Internal Affairs division is investigating the possibility of disciplinary charges.

The evidence from a criminal investigation will be reviewed by a special prosecutor, who will make a final decision regarding any criminal prosecution, Repella said. It was not clear as of Thursday afternoon who would be appointed special prosecutor for the case.
