Police find three wrecked cars, no drivers

By Eric Minor

It's an unusual police call to be sure:  a three-car crash with no drivers present.

Officers from several Belmont County municipalities found three vehicles crunched together near West Wheeling and not one person nearby.

The backstory emerged quickly. The first vehicle, a red SUV, had become immobilized when its driveshaft dropped out. A second car, traveling with the first, had pulled over to provide assistance. That's when a third vehicle, a blue truck, sped up on the scene and rear-ended the second car.

Police said the driver of the blue truck jumped out of the truck and ran into the woods near the Ohio River. The drivers of the other two vehicles had walked up the road to warn approaching traffic of the hazard.

The driver of the blue truck, who police say was driving under the influence, eventually returned to the scene of the crash and surrendered.

His name has not been released. He was taken to the Martins Ferry Police Department for further testing and questioning.

There were no serious injuries.
