Police Intercept Marijuana Mailed From Texas

Texas Investigators Search For Sender

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

According to Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla, every day, drug-sniffing dogs search the UPS facility in Houston looking for illegal drugs that criminals may be trying to smuggle through the delivery company.

Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla told NEWS9 the drug dogs took special interest in a box labeled for a two-day delivery to Steubenville.

Houston police tipped off local police that the package should arrive at a home on the 400 block of Spring Avenue Friday afternoon.

When the package arrived, police were waiting.

"Once it was delivered, it was placed in a vehicle," Abdalla said. "Steubenville police stopped the vehicle, and three people were arrested."

Narcotics investigators opened the UPS box and found a tightly compressed bale of marijuana wrapped in cellophane.

Police say the bale weighs 20 pounds and would be worth $20,000 on the street.

Abdalla said UPS is not involved in the crime.

Houston police are searching for the person who sent the package.

The three women accused of receiving it will be charged on Monday.
