WEIRTON, W.Va. —

Weirton police are warning the public about a scheme that uses the justice system to trick people out of money over the phone.

Investigators in the city said an elderly woman was schemed out of a large sum of money after a bogus call.

"She received a call from a subject who reported to be an attorney representing her grandson, and he further said that the grandson was in jail on a DUI charge and they needed bond money. The lady in question happened to have a grandson (and) was concerned, as most would be. And over the period of a few days, (she) wiretapped a substantial amount of money to this supposed lawyer," said Weirton police Lt. Greg Moodie.

After the woman had wired the money, she found out that her grandson had never been arrested and was not in jail.

"These people are preying on the most basic human nature: Our love of family and loved ones," Moodie said about the criminals.

He said if people receive a similar call, they should notify police.

"Don't just take it at face value. The shock and worry about a loved one being in danger or in jail is bad enough, but if it can be independently verified before you make any type of wire transfer (then do so)," Moodie said.

He added, "In my experience, police agencies -- I would say everywhere -- always offer a chance for the arrestees to make arrangements for bond. Very rarely would a third party call out of the blue and ask for money to get someone out of jail."

Investigators said the phone number the call came from is from somewhere in the continental U.S., but they are not releasing many specific details.

Anyone with information or who receives a similar call is asked to call the NEWS9 Lauttamus Security Crime Busters Tipline at 800-862-BUST. Tips can also be emailed to crimebusters@wtov.com.
