Police: Man vandalizes store, waits to be arrested

By Alex Koscevic

MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. —

A man is behind behind bars after police said he broke into a Greg's Market in Moundsville, W.Va, vandalized the store, then waited for police to arrive.

Greg Cassis, the store's owner, said the damage includes a broken front window, shattered deli cases and broken credit card machines.

According to police, Michael Ramirez broke in holding a hammer and vandalizedthe store around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. He is charged with breaking and entering and destruction of property. The man caused at least $10,000 in damage, Cassis said, but the store still opened its doors.

"It's tough, so we can't be closed a day. We had to get it done last night, because we had to be open this morning. Our customers expect it," Cassis said.

Cassis said he knows the suspect and that he comes to the market a couple times a week and has always been friendly to store employees.

"He's a local. ... He's very polite, and something just snapped last night," Cassis said.

Even more shocking, Cassis said, is that the man didn't flee after the vandalism, simply sitting down on a shopping basket while store alarms went off, according to police.

"He wasn't stealing anything, and he really didn't even eat that much and was confused and couldn't get back out and just sat and waited for the police to come get him," Cassis said.
