BELLAIRE, Ohio —

It started as a simple traffic stop for a Bellaire police officer Friday night. Authorities said a woman ran a stop sign at 41st and Noble streets.

"[She] disregarded the stop sign in a high pedestrian traffic area. They got behind the vehicle and didn't get it stopped later," Police Chief Mike Kovalyk said.

An officer tracked the woman down in the area of 47th and Jefferson streets, police said.

"It appeared right away that she was impaired," Kovalyk said.

The driver, Jessica Glessner, 27, of Wheeling, was given a field sobriety test, and police said she couldn't pass it. Then, police said, the situation turned violent.

"She also started making threats to the officers and the other people there," Kovalyk said.

Glessner was placed in handcuffs, but Kovalyk said she turned her aggression toward his officer.

"She assaulted one of my officers, kicked him in the chest," Kovalyk said.

He said she also kicked steel security bars off the inside door of the cruiser. Police believe it will take a few hundred dollars to repair the damage. Even more costly, the Bellaire Police Department is down a cruiser.

"To a certain extent, it will be taken out of service, sidle-lining one of my cruisers for awhile," Kovalyk said.

As a result, Glessner was taken to the Belmont County Jail. She's charged with operating a vehicle under the influence, menacing, assault on an officer, disorderly conduct and damaging village property.

"Total disregard for the law," Kovalyk said.
