Police: Parents About To Use Drugs In Front Of Kids

POWHATAN POINT, Ohio —

Police in Powhatan Point said they made a disturbing discovery during a search -- two parents allegedly about to use drugs right in front of their two young children.

The home on Sycamore Street sat quiet Thursday, but Wednesday night it was a much different scene. Police raided the home to find drugs, two parents, and two small children inside -- ages 2 and 4.

"Two of the suspects had just crushed up a bunch of pills and were preparing to snort them. The children were within about three feet of the drugs," said Powhatan Point Police Chief Chet Oldfield.

Oldfield said they were just following up on a drug overdose that happened at the home the night before, and he was shocked to find what was going on inside.

Police arrested Jason Hess immediately. He now faces a slew of charges including drug possession and child endangerment. The mother, Tara Darby, wasn't arrested at the time, but she is also facing several similar charges.

"Child Services was called last night, and we decided it was best to leave the kids there with the mother. All the drugs were confiscated from the house," said Oldfield.

Police said they made that decision because Darby didn't have any relatives to take care of the children.

Child Services was expected to start its investigation Thursday and will determine what happens to the kids.

"There's no sense in having those children in that type of environment. It’s very disturbing to see the kids involved in it," said Oldfield.

Hess was arraigned in court Thursday. Darby is expected to be arraigned next week.
