JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio —

American Electric Power officials said they are dealing with the worst outage since the remnants of Hurricane Ike hit the Ohio Valley a few years ago.

AEP officials said more than a half-million customers were without power after Friday's storms. It mainly damaged poles and the powerinfrastructure, and Wednesday night's storms  caused power outages for thousands of customers.

As of 5 p.m., the following is an update of outages for AEP customers:

- Belmont County, Ohio - 614

- Guernsey County, Ohio - 6,163

- Harrison County, Ohio - 185

- Jefferson County, Ohio - 1,262

- Marshall County, W.Va. - 1,702

- Monroe County, Ohio - 378

- Noble County, Ohio - 390

- Ohio County, W.Va. - 456

For Mon Valley/First Energy customers, the number of customers without service as of 5 p.m. :

- Hancock County - 145

- Brooke County - 555

- Tyler County - 1,566

- Wetzel County - 3,695

Officials said crews are restoring power in large chunks -- about 50 to 100 customers at a time -- but residents said they still feel frustrated.

"They should put more guys out there to get it going quicker. It's been how many days now?" said Elijah Foldi.

AEP officials said they have to prioritize crews, and the company is focusing on the largely affected areas first, then working their way out. They said this is one of the most complicated restoration efforts they have had to deal with. They have even had to use temporary solutions to get customers back online.

Wednesday night's storm dealt another blow, but officials said about 5,000 crews from as far as Canada, Alabama and Connecticut are in Ohio and working on lines. AEP officials said they requested help as soon as the storm hit Friday, which helped them get a head start on mutual assistance.

Officials said Jefferson County should have power by Friday evening, Belmont County by midnight Saturday, Ohio and Marshall counties by early evening Sunday, and Guernsey County by midnight Sunday.

If you don't have power and your neighbor does, AEP officials ask that customers call the customer solution hotline at 1-800-672-2231.
