Public Employees Plan To File A Referendum Against Senate Bill 5

If Successful, Referendum Would Be Placed On November 8 Ballot

Jim drake is a teacher and the president of the St. Clairsville Education Association.

"Obviously we're very disappointed, not terribly surprised," Drake said.

He is also one of Ohio's 350,000 public employees who will be affected by the passing of the state's Senate Bill 5.

"We have been preparing for this for the last two or three weeks," Drake said.

What they have been preparing for is a piece of legislation that will not affect the ability of public employees to negotiate wages but will prevent their ability to negotiate health care, sick time, and pension benefits. It is a move drake calls unacceptable, and public employees plan to fight.

"We will continue battling this piece of legislation in the form of a referendum. We will begin gathering signatures. When I say "we" I mean the Ohio Education Association, all the other public employees, and labor organizations," Drake said.

In order to place Senate Bill 5 on the November 8 ballot, organizers will need to gather 231,149 signatures from 44 counties within 90 days of Governor Kasich signing the bill.

"There will be a coordinated and concerted effort to defeat this," Drake said.
