Religious leaders work to counter negative attention teen rape case has brought to area

By NEWS9

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

With the rape trial of two Steubenville High School student-athletes just one week away, local religious leaders are trying to counter the negative attention the case has brought to the Ohio Valley.

An ecumenical prayer service called Faith In The Future will be held at St. Peter Catholic Church in Steubenville at 7 p.m. Monday.

"We have wonderful pastors involved in this prayer service and it's really about bringing God back to the center of what our thoughts should be about. Whether it's the trial that's coming up and many of the other things going on in our community," said Tracy McManamon, chairman of Faith In The Future.

The case, which has generated international attention, is expected to last between three and four days.

The teen defendants are charged with raping a 16-year-old girl on Aug. 11, 2012. Both have pleaded not guilty.

A visiting juvenile judge will handle the case and will rule on the teens' guilt or innocence. There is no jury in the case.

Special prosecutors from the state Attorney General's office will represent the state of Ohio in the trial.
