Report: Groups Have Plan For 4 Casinos In Ohio

CLEVELAND —

Two rival casino groups are working together on a proposal that would bring four resort-style casinos to Ohio.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported on its Web site Wednesday that MyOhioNow.com and Penn National Gaming Inc. are preparing a signature-gathering campaign in an effort to qualify the proposal for the November ballot.

Survey: If a casino issue were put back on the ballot in Ohio, would you support it?

Citing unnamed sources, The Plain Dealer said the casinos would be built in Columbus, Cleveland, Toledo and Cincinnati and would include hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues.

Some local people said they don't think they'll sign the petition.

"I wouldn't vote for it, no," said Karen Hinkle, of Holloway. "I just think it brings a lot of unsavory characters into the area."

Others said they believe casinos could increase local jobs and revenue.

"I don't really think it's a good idea, but why lose the money?" asked Carl Piper, of Bellaire. "We're losing a lot of money. Why go out of state? Keep it here. That's how I look at it."

Mike Sikole, of St. Clairsville, disagreed.

"I don't think particularly it would be a good idea to have casinos because it really doesn't bring that many jobs to the area," said Sikole.

The newspaper reported Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and Cleveland businessman Jeff Jacobs are also behind the proposal.

Penn National spent more than $45 million last fall to defeat MyOhioNow.com's ballot initiative that would have placed a casino in southwest Ohio.
