MARTINS FERRY, Ohio —

A special dog that survived a massive fire at a Martins Ferry home is now up for adoption.

When firefighters first found the dog, he was starting to freeze. His owner decided not to take him back.

Now, Joe Harvey, 18, and his family are fostering the dog. Harvey said as soon as he heard about the dog, he and his family wanted to help.

The dog Harvey affectionately calls Dodger is also the focus of a huge outpouring of generosity. The Martins Ferry Kroger reached out to the family, donating toys, treats and food. Dr. Robert Carr of the Martins Ferry Animal Hospital is giving Dodger free veterinary care. Not to mention, a local grooming parlor gave Dodger a free spa visit.

Harvey said at first, the dog was shy, but now he seems to be coming around. He said it will be hard to give up Dodger to a permanent family.

"I've grown attached to him over the last couple days, but I'm sure we'll find a good home for him," Harvey said.

The family is asking anyone interested in giving Dodger a permanent home to pick up an application at 1124 Indiana St. in Martins Ferry beginning this Saturday. Those who are interested can also call 740-312-5337 and leave a message.
