Reuters report leaves people wondering if federal gov. wants to track personal banking information

A report out this week has some people wondering if the government wants a peek at personal financial information.


News agency Reuters claimed a Treasury Department document outlined new plans from the Obama administration.

According to Reuters, the document said more federal spy agencies would get unlimited access to a massive financial database that tracks suspicious banking activity.

The Treasury Department tells NEWS9's Washington bureau no such plan exists.

Jessica Zuckerman of the Heritage Foundation, said "It's important to remember the average American isn't going to ping the interest of the FBI or CIA."

A treasury spokesman said the suspicious banking database helps law enforcement track financial fraudsters and suspected terrorists -- not the average American.
