River High School under renovation

By Kate Davison

MONROE COUNTY, Ohio —

Out with the old, and in with the new. That's the plan for River High School. Superintendent Larry Elliott said that in 2009, plans were put into place to remodel the school, with classes carrying on as usual. "It was decided that we would remodel River High School with the students in place, and so we are following the wishes of the voters," Elliott said. "[They’re working on] updates on the electrical, technological updates, duct work, new heating, new cooling systems and so forth," Principal Ed Trifonoff said. But with renovation, comes compromise. As fall turns to winter, classrooms grow colder, and without permanent heat in the building, Trifonoff said temporary heaters are in every classroom. "We have heaters in every one of the classrooms, so the kids aren't without heat totally. We do have heat and we will have permanent heat here in the near future," Trifonoff said. It's a situation school administrators say they are monitoring very closely, and a contingency plan is in place to move some 230 students to the former Monroe Central building. In the meantime, as contractors take over various sections of the building, teachers are sharing classrooms, biding time for a brighter future. "When you're faced with adversity and when you have a good staff, it actually helps out a lot, it helps me out a lot being the principal and being the leader down here at River High School," Trifonoff said. Officials said a permanent heater is being shipped out from Kentucky Thursday, and should arrive by next week. Parents or other community members are encouraged to call school officials if they have any questions about the ongoing construction.
