Road Conditions Worsen As Snow Blows

Severe Weather Team 9 said the Ohio Valley can expect another inch or two of snow coming later Friday night into Saturday.

Severe Weather Team 9 said sustained winds at 15 to 20 mph with gust to 35 mph will cause blowing and drifting snow.

The wind makes accumulation nearly impossible to measure accurately.

As of 10:00 p.m., road conditions had worsened in nearly every Ohio Valley county with several counties in Ohio upgrading their emergency levels.

A large box truck had overturned in the median of US 22 in Jefferson County between the Lovers Lane and John Scott Highway Exits.

NEWS9 also found an car stuck in Shadyside. Police said the driver had just put new tires on her car, but they were no match for the worsening road conditions.

In West Virginia, State Route 2 was slushy and snow-covered and drivers were taking it slow.

"I think this late in the winter, obviously people have gotten accustomed to the driving (and) to the conditions to allow more time," said Lt. Jeff LaRoche of the state patrol.

LaRoche said snow days have also caused fewer drivers to be on the road.

"Schools have been canceled for the most part, today specifically, so once schools are out, that cuts down on a lot of traffic," he said.

LaRoche also attributed the recent lull in crashes to people being pre-warned about weather forecasts and road crews that are staying on top of treating roadways.

Blowing and drifting snow was creating a challenge for road crews, however. Tom Corey of the Ohio Department of Transportation said there are 12 trucks on the road around the clock locally to keep up with new snowfall and snow that keeps drifting back onto already-plowed roads.

Corey, ODOT's District 11 manager, said because the snow is light and fluffy, the new snow isn't sticking to snow already on the ground.

"It's just blowing right off, so drifting is significant and we are doubling by on some of the routes to deal with the drifts," he said.

Crews said there is also the possibility of trees coming down and they are prepared to take care of that.
