Road Crews, Police Out In Full Force For New Year's Eve

While road crews hit the streets Thursday preparing for winter weather, police will be cracking down on drunken drivers.

Crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation were treating roads early with salt, but that will likely change to a mixture later as temperatures drop and a wintry mix is expected to move in.

Snow Wednesday night into Thursday caused Guernsey County to be under a Level 1 snow alert, which means roadways were hazardous with blowing and drifting snow and roads were icy. The sheriff urged drivers to use caution.

Tom Corey, ODOT District 11 manager, said he has 12 trucks out pulling 12-hour shifts.

"They'll be a lot of activities with New Year's Eve and people just really need to use caution because as the nighttime comes, the temperatures will drop and the roads will stay slick and there could be possibly refreezing of some areas," Corey said.

Corey said crews are also taking care of some preventative maintenance Thursday on some of the trucks so they're ready to go later.

Local police officers, state troopers and sheriff's deputies will also be out in full force New Year's Eve patrolling roadways and cracking down on drunken drivers.

"New Year's Eve is typically busy concerning drunk drivers. However, the last few years people are celebrating safer and many places are providing taxi services. It just really hasn't been as bad the last few years, and we're hoping that continues," said Lt. Roger Norris of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Norris said troopers enforce the law on major back roads everywhere.

"Officers know areas that are more common for alcohol-related crashes and that's where they'll focus their attention," Norris said. "Celebrating safely on holidays is important. People need to make sure they have a designated driver to get them to and from places safely."
