On Thursday, crews with Shelley & Sands were putting concrete barriers into place. When the crossover is complete, there will be 703 barriers separating the single north and southbound lanes.

Both southbound lanes have been closed since a landslide, causing drivers to be detoured. Once the crossover is complete, one lane of the stretch will be open in each direction.

Workers have also put up 26 lights to increase visibility and safety, said Ohio Department of Transportation District 11 Engineer Nick Susich.

A subcontractor that handled the work finished the job quickly, nixing a two-week long wait to open the crossover.

Crews still must dig a ditch that is 14 inches deep and 500 feet long on both sides where the median used to be. The area will be filled in and smoothed over with asphalt so traffic can drive over it. Lines also need to be painted.

Susich said crews -- and drivers -- should hope for a sunny Sunday.

"We cannot do striping on a wet pavement. That's pretty much the only thing we can't do as far as the weather," Susich said. "Hopefully open things up Sunday night. If we don't get it done by sunset Sunday, we'll wait until Monday morning."
