Safety concerns over damaged tequila packaging prompts recall in Ohio

Customers should return products for refund or exchange

By NEWS9

The Ohio Department of Commerce is recalling certain kinds of tequila because of safety concerns regarding damaged glass bottle stoppers.

The 1.75 liter bottles of 1800 brand tequila in the Silver and Reposado varieties are being recalled. In a news release from the Department of Commerce, state officials said, "This is a problem with the packaging, not the tequila."

Customers who bought the product should return it to the store where it was purchased for a refund or exchange.

The Division of Liquor Control took immediate action to remove the recalled tequila from its liquor agencies' shelves. Shipments from warehouses have also been halted.

"Based on the division's investigation, in the normal course of transit there was damage to some cases. Some bottles appeared undamaged until they were opened and glass fell from the stopper into the bottle. This was not the case with all bottles the division checked," the news release stated.

The division is not aware of anyone who has been harmed by a damaged bottle, but officials said in the release, "Out of an abundance of caution to protect Ohioans, the Division continues its investigation and is requiring the product supplier to correct the problem."
