WEIRTON, W.Va. —

A new school in Weirton is under construction, and it will come with more than just a nurse's office -- a health care center will be inside the school.

The new Weirton Elementary school will be a consolidation of Liberty, Broadview and Weirton Heights elementary schools. The school will also house a health care center, which can provide care to students with or without health insurance as long as they have parental consent.

According to Hancock County Schools Superintendent Sue Smith, the care won't replace visits to a primary care physician, but it will be more extensive than a visit to the nurse's office. The center won't just be for treating illnesses, but also for preventing health problems, Smith said.

"This would help our students not just for treating, but also teaching good health habits. For instance, one of the things in West Virginia that is a big problem is obesity, so this health care center could provide training and teach good nutritional habits, proper ways to brush your teeth, good hygiene," Smith said.

The school and health care center are scheduled to open in 2014.
